How to Sign a PDF Online for Free (No Printing)

4 min readUpdated 5 October 2026

To sign a PDF online, open Sign PDF, drop in the document, press Signature and draw, type or upload your signature. Press Place it, drag it onto the signature line, then press Download signed PDF.

There's no printing, scanning or account, and it works the same on a computer, an iPhone or an Android phone — sign with your finger on a touchscreen. The document is signed inside your browser and never uploaded, which matters for contracts and forms with personal details.

Step by step

  1. 1Open Sign PDFGo to the Sign PDF tool and drop your PDF onto the page, or click to choose it.
  2. 2Create your signaturePress Signature and choose Draw (finger, pen or mouse), Type (your name in a handwriting style) or Upload (a photo of your signature on paper). Pick black or blue ink.
  3. 3Place it on the pagePress Place it. Drag the signature onto the right spot and pull the corner dot to resize it. Use the page arrows or thumbnails to move to another page.
  4. 4Add the date and anything elseUse Date, Initials and Text to fill in the rest — for example today's date next to your signature or your name in capitals. Tap any item to change, duplicate or delete it.
  5. 5Download the signed PDFPress Download signed PDF (or Ctrl/⌘ + Enter). The file is saved with “-signed” added to its name, and Send to… lets you compress or merge it next.

How to sign a PDF on iPhone or Android

Open the tool in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop area to choose the PDF — from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Downloads, or a file you saved from LINE or email. Tap Signature, choose Draw and sign with your finger in the box.

Drag the signature into place with your finger and use the corner dot to make it bigger or smaller. When you tap Download signed PDF, the file goes to your Downloads (Files › Downloads on iPhone), ready to send back.

Tip: Leave Remember on this device switched on and your signature is waiting under “Saved on this device” next time — no need to draw it again. It's stored only in this browser; use the X on a saved signature to forget it.

Draw, type or upload: which signature looks best?

Draw gives your real signature and works best on a touchscreen or with a stylus; on a laptop, a trackpad works but takes a little practice. Undo and Clear let you try again.

Type turns your name into a signature with a choice of styles — Brush, Script, Handwriting or Serif. It's quick and tidy, though the fonts depend on your device and may look slightly different elsewhere.

Upload uses a photo of your signature: sign on plain white paper, take a photo and choose it. Keep Remove white background on so only the ink shows on the document.

Dates, initials and every-page signing

Date adds today's date in the format you choose, from 26/09/2026 or 2026-09-26 to “September 26, 2026” or a Thai date with the Buddhist year. Text adds anything else, such as your printed name or job title, in black, blue or red.

Contracts often need initials on every page. Add your Initials, then switch on Show on every page — they're placed in the same spot on all pages in one go.

Is an online signature valid?

This tool places a picture of your signature, plus any dates and text, onto the pages — an everyday electronic signature, much like signing a printout and scanning it. It doesn't add a certificate-based digital signature.

That's accepted for many everyday documents, such as forms, quotes and internal approvals, but rules vary by country and organisation. For official or high-value documents, check with whoever asked for the signature what they accept.

Other PDF jobs before or after signing

Signing is often one step of several. These tools help with the rest:

  • Fill PDF Forms — type into the form fields before you sign.
  • PDF Editor — add text, highlights, shapes or images anywhere on the page.
  • Merge PDF — attach the signed pages to other documents.
  • Compress PDF — make the signed file small enough to email.
