How to Split a PDF and Extract Pages (Free)
3 min readUpdated 5 October 2026
To split a PDF, open Split PDF, drop in your file, type the pages you want — for example 1-3, 5, 8-10 — and press the split button. Each range becomes its own PDF, or turn on Merge ranges into one PDF to extract all the chosen pages into a single file.
It works in any browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android, with no account and no watermark. The pages are copied on your own device, so nothing is uploaded and the extracted pages keep exactly the same quality as the original.
Step by step
- 1Open Split PDFGo to the Split PDF tool. It's ready straight away — no download or sign-up.
- 2Add your PDFDrop a PDF onto the page or click to choose it. A preview of every page appears so you can see what you're splitting.
- 3Choose how to splitUnder Split by, pick Ranges to choose pages yourself, Every page to make one PDF per page, or Chunks to cut the file into groups of equal size.
- 4Set the pagesFor Ranges, type something like 1-3, 5, 8-10 — commas separate the files, and “7-” means page 7 to the end. For Chunks, set Pages per file. The preview marks which file each page goes into.
- 5SplitPress Split into N files — or Extract PDF when there's only one output (Ctrl/⌘ + Enter also works). A single file downloads straight away.
- 6Download your filesWith several files, download each one from the list or press Download ZIP to get them all at once. Send to… passes them on to another tool.
Three ways to split a PDF
Pick the mode that matches the job:
- Ranges — you decide. “1-3, 5” gives two files: pages 1–3, and page 5 on its own. Ideal for pulling one chapter, an invoice or a signature page out of a bigger file.
- Every page — each page becomes its own PDF. Handy for separating a scan of several one-page documents.
- Chunks — fixed-size pieces, e.g. 10 pages per file. Useful when a long file is too big to upload or send in one go.
How to extract specific pages into one PDF
Want pages 2, 5 and 9 together in one new file? Choose Ranges, type 2, 5, 9 and switch on Merge ranges into one PDF. The button changes to Extract PDF and you get a single file with just those pages.
To remove a few pages and keep the rest, it's often quicker to delete them in Organize PDF, where you can also rotate and reorder pages. To put split files back together later, use Merge PDF.
Tip: The preview dims pages that won't be included and labels the rest with their file number (#1, #2…), so you can check the plan before you split.
Splitting a PDF on iPhone or Android
Open the tool in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop area to choose a PDF from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Downloads. Typing ranges works the same as on a computer.
When you get several files, it's usually simplest on a phone to tap the download button next to each one. Download ZIP works too — on iPhone, tapping a ZIP in the Files app unpacks it.
If something goes wrong
If the range box turns red, the pages don't match the document — for example page 12 in a 10-page file. The message under the box says what to fix.
If the PDF won't open, it's usually password-protected or damaged. Open it with its password, save a new copy (for example “Print › Save as PDF”), then split that copy.
Split files still too big to send? Run them through Compress PDF afterwards.
Questions people ask
- How do I extract one page from a PDF?
- Choose Ranges, type the page number (for example 4) and press Extract PDF. That page downloads as its own PDF.
- Does splitting a PDF reduce the quality?
- No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays sharp and searchable and images keep their original quality.
- How do I split a PDF into equal parts?
- Choose Chunks and set Pages per file. A 30-page file with 10 pages per file gives three PDFs of 10 pages each.
- Is it safe to split a PDF online?
- With this tool, yes: the splitting happens in your browser and the file is never uploaded to a server.
