How to Edit a PDF for Free (Add Text, No Upload)

3 min readUpdated 5 October 2026

To edit a PDF for free, open PDF Editor, drop in your file, pick a tool such as Text or Highlight and click on the page. When you're done, press Download PDF to save an edited copy.

Everything runs in your browser, so it works the same on a laptop, a Mac or a phone, with no account and no software to install. Your PDF is edited on your own device and never uploaded, which matters for contracts, forms and anything with personal details.

How to change existing text in a PDF

Most PDFs don't store text as editable paragraphs, so this editor works in layers on top of the page: you can't retype a word that's already there, but you can replace it cleanly.

Draw a White-out box over the old words, then add a Text box on top with the new wording. Match the size and colour in the style panel, and it reads like the original. White-out also comes in light grey and black to match the page.

Tip: White-out only hides things visually — the original text is still inside the file. For bank numbers or ID details you must truly remove, start from a version of the document that doesn't contain them.

Editing a PDF on iPhone and Android

Open the editor in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop area to pick a PDF from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Downloads. The tools sit in a row above the page; swipe it sideways to see them all.

Tap the page to place text, and use your finger or a stylus with Draw. To change colour or size, tap the style button next to the tools. When you're done, tap Download PDF — on iPhone the file lands in Files › Downloads.

Typing in Thai and other languages

You can type in any language your device supports, including Thai. English and other Latin-alphabet text is saved as real PDF text, while Thai and other scripts are saved as a sharp image of the text, so it looks right in every PDF reader — but that part can't be selected or searched later.

What to do after editing

Once the page looks right, these tools pick up where the editor stops:

  • Sign PDF — add a proper signature and the date.
  • Fill PDF Forms — type into the fields of a fillable form.
  • Compress PDF — shrink the file for email or LINE.
  • Merge PDF — join the edited file with other documents.

Questions people ask

Can I edit a PDF for free without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. PDF Editor adds text, highlights, white-out, drawings, shapes and images in your browser for free, with no account and no watermark added to your file.
Is it safe to edit a PDF online?
With this tool, yes: the PDF is opened and saved inside your browser and never uploaded to a server, so contracts and payslips stay on your device.
Can I edit the existing text in my PDF?
Not directly. Cover the old words with White-out and type the new text on top — the result looks like an edit, and it works on any PDF.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
Not until it's unlocked. Open it with its password in your PDF reader, print it to a new PDF (“Save as PDF”), then edit that copy.
