How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF (Free, No Upload)
4 min readUpdated 5 October 2026
To add page numbers to a PDF, open Stamp PDF, drop in your file, switch Watermark off and Page numbers on, pick a format and position, then press Stamp PDF. The numbered copy downloads straight away.
It's free, there's no account, and it works in any browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android. The numbers are added on your own device — the PDF is never uploaded — and a live preview shows exactly where each number will sit before you save.
Step by step
- 1Open Stamp PDF and add your fileGo to the Stamp PDF tool and drop your PDF onto the page, or click to choose it. A preview of the first page appears.
- 2Switch off the watermarkThe tool starts with a red “CONFIDENTIAL” watermark switched on. If you only want numbers, turn Watermark off.
- 3Turn on page numbersSwitch on Page numbers, then pick a Format — 1, 1 / N or Page 1 of N — and a Position: top or bottom, left, center or right.
- 4Fine-tune the lookSet Start at if numbering shouldn't begin at 1, adjust Size (6–24 pt), and change Text colour or Margin to move the numbers closer to or further from the edge. Use the page arrows above the preview to check other pages.
- 5Choose pages and stampUnder Pages, keep All pages or pick Custom and type a range such as 2-. Press Stamp PDF (or Ctrl/⌘ + Enter). The file is saved with “-stamped” added to its name, and Send to… passes it to another tool.
Skip the cover page or start from another number
Numbers only go on the pages you select, and they're counted from the first selected page. To leave the cover unnumbered, choose Custom, type 2- (page 2 to the end) and keep Start at on 1: page 2 then shows “1”, and “N” in 1 / N counts only the numbered pages.
Start at is also handy for documents in several parts. If part two should carry on from page 40, set it to 41 — with Page 1 of N, the last number shown is the highest page number, so a 10-page file reads “Page 41 of 50” to “Page 50 of 50”.
Page X of Y, file names and dates in the footer
For more than a plain number, switch on Header & footer. Each has three boxes — left, center and right — and you can use {page}, {total}, {date} and {file} as placeholders. For example, put {file} in the left footer box and {page} / {total} in the right one.
Placeholders follow the same numbering as Page numbers, including Start at and your page range. If you write your own wording in the footer, leave Page numbers off so the number doesn't appear twice.
Tip: Text in Thai or another non-Latin script is embedded as a sharp image, so it prints correctly even though the standard PDF fonts can't show it.
Adding page numbers on iPhone or Android
Open the tool in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop area to choose a PDF from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Downloads. The switches and settings work the same as on a computer; the preview updates as you change them.
Tap Stamp PDF and the numbered file goes to your Downloads (Files › Downloads on iPhone), ready to share by email or LINE.
If the numbers don't look right
If a number overlaps text that's already on the page, move it to the top, raise the Margin, or make it smaller. If the wrong pages are numbered, check the Custom range — the line under the box shows how many pages are selected, or what needs fixing if the range doesn't match the document.
Landscape and rotated pages are handled for you: the number is placed where it appears when you view the page. If the PDF won't open at all, it's usually password-protected or damaged — open it with its password, save a new copy (for example “Print › Save as PDF”) and number that.
Do this before or after numbering
Page numbers should go on last, once the page order is final:
- Organize PDF — reorder, rotate or delete pages first.
- Merge PDF — combine several files so the numbering runs straight through.
- Compress PDF — shrink the numbered file for email.
- Sign PDF — add your signature once the document is complete.
Questions people ask
- Can I add page numbers without a watermark?
- Yes. The watermark is on when the tool opens, so switch Watermark off and only the page numbers are added.
- How do I number a PDF starting from page 2?
- Under Pages choose Custom and type 2-. The cover stays blank and page 2 is numbered 1. To number it 2 instead, set Start at to 2.
- Can I write “Page 1 of 10”?
- Yes. Pick Page 1 of N as the format. The total is filled in automatically, so a 10-page file reads Page 1 of 10 to Page 10 of 10.
- Does adding page numbers change the quality?
- No. The existing pages are kept as they are and the numbers are drawn on top, so text stays sharp and searchable.
- Is it safe to add page numbers online?
- With this tool, yes: everything happens in your browser and the PDF is never uploaded to a server.
