How to Remove the Background from an Image (Free)
3 min readUpdated 5 October 2026
To remove the background from an image, open Background Remover, pick People or Objects & products, and drop in your photo. The AI cuts out the subject in a few seconds; press Download PNG to save it with a transparent background.
It's free, needs no account and works in a modern browser on a computer or phone. The AI model downloads to your browser once and then runs on your own device, so your photos are never uploaded — and after that first download it keeps working offline.
Step by step
- 1Choose the AI modelUnder AI model, pick People for portraits and selfies (small, fast download) or Objects & products for products, pets, cars and everything else (bigger download, best quality).
- 2Add your photoDrop one or more images onto the page, click to choose them, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl/⌘ + V. The first photo triggers the one-time model download.
- 3Check the cut-outDrag the before/after divider to compare. Switching the model later re-processes your photos with the new one.
- 4Pick a backgroundUnder Background, keep None for a transparent PNG, or choose Colour, Blur or Image to place the subject on something new.
- 5Tidy the edgesIf you see a halo or lost hair, open Refine edges and adjust Mask threshold and Edge softness.
- 6DownloadPress Download PNG for the current photo, or Download all as ZIP for a batch. Send to… passes the result to another image tool.
People or Objects & products: which mode to use
People is built for portraits: it's a download of roughly 30 MB and runs quickly even on older phones, which is why it's the default on phones. Objects & products handles almost anything — shop products, food, pets, cars — with cleaner edges, but it's a download of about 115 MB and needs more memory.
Each mode downloads once and is then cached by your browser. If the Objects model runs out of memory on your device, the tool tells you and offers People mode instead.
Getting a clean cut-out
The AI does most of the work, but the photo you start with makes a big difference:
- Use a subject that clearly stands out from the background in colour or brightness.
- Keep the whole subject in the frame — cropped hands or product edges confuse the model.
- Use the largest original you have. The cut-out is saved at the photo's full resolution (very large photos are capped at about 16 megapixels).
- Fine hair or fur fringed with background colour? Lower Mask threshold a little to keep detail, or raise it to cut away halos.
Tip: For product photos on marketplaces, choose Colour and pick white — you get a clean white background in one step.
Using it on iPhone and Android
Open the tool in Safari or Chrome and tap the drop area to choose photos from your gallery. People mode is selected automatically on most phones because it's light and quick.
Tap Download PNG when you're happy. On iPhone, the PNG usually goes to Files › Downloads; open it there and use Share › Save Image to put it in Photos.
What to do with your cut-out
A transparent PNG is a starting point for plenty of other jobs:
- Image Converter — turn it into WebP or shrink it for the web (keep PNG or WebP to keep the transparency).
- Collage Maker — combine several cut-outs into one image.
- AI Upscaler — enlarge a small photo before or after removing the background.
- Meme Maker — add captions for chat and social posts.
Questions people ask
- Is this background remover really free?
- Yes — no sign-up, no watermark and no credit system. You can process as many photos as you like, including batches.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once and runs on your own device. Your photos never leave it.
- How do I get a transparent PNG?
- Leave the background set to None and press Download PNG. Transparent areas show as a checkerboard on screen and stay see-through in the file.
- Why is the first photo slow?
- The first time you use a mode, your browser downloads its AI model (about 30 MB for People, 115 MB for Objects & products). After that it starts quickly and works offline.
